The Niwaki Herbaceous Sickle (flax cutter) is great for rip-cutting grasses, flaxes and other herbaceous matter.
Traditionally used in Japan for hand-harvesting rice, this style of sickle is also ideally suited for use on herbaceous matter and grasses. It features a serrated blade which easily handles tough, dry stalks.
Simply grab a handful and use the sickle to cut with a single, strong sawing action.

CARING FOR YOUR TOOLS
Most of Niwaki's sharp tools are crafted from carbon steel. To keep your tools in good condition and ensure they last for many years of use, they require some simple but regular maintenance. Here are some usage & care tips, to help you get the most out of your tools...
Usage:
- Japanese steel is hard and sharp. To avoid chips and preserve the steel edge, do not cut wire, metal, stone, or plastic.
- Do not twist or apply uneven pressure
- It’s better to cut diagonally across branches (not straight across), so you cut along the fibres
- For heavier cuts, make sure you’re using the base of the blades (not the tips)
Care:
- Remove leaf resin, rust and gunk with a Crean Mate and water
- Dry, wipe over with Camellia Oil and store in a dry place
- Sharpen when needed (secateurs can be sharpened every couple of weeks, shears & topiary clippers after every use to see an incredible difference).
