Orchid Potting Mix - Coarse

When it comes to orchids, the potting mix you choose can be make or break. This Bio Leaf Premium Orchid Potting Mix is crafted from quality hard orchid bark, tree fern fibre, hardwood charcoal and pumice - components that promote healthy airflow, moisture retention and drainage. Suited specifically to the needs of orchids, this potting mix is an open medium that allows air and high volumes of water to move freely over the roots without becoming waterlogged. 

As orchid enthusiasts will know, a ready supply of water is key to growing great orchids. However you don't want to oversaturate the soil, as the roots could suffocate! Orchid roots also need plenty of air - so you need a potting mix that holds enough moisture without suffocating the roots of your plant. This is where Bio Leaf's Premium Orchid Potting Mix comes in; designed to create a environment for healthy root development in orchids, promoting growth, health and flowering.

Depending on time of year, watering should be required every 3 to 5 days. In most circumstances this potting mix should last for about 3 years before you need to re-pot.

This is the coarse grade Orchid Potting Mix, which is suitable for orchids growing in a 4”-5” pot size. This mix is suited for orchids that have thicker roots like the Cattleya or Phalaenopsis or roots that require slightly less moisture like some of the Vanda alliance.

Also available is the medium grade Orchid Potting Mix, which is suited to orchids that have thinner roots.

Ingredients: 

• Kiwi Orchid Bark - Improves Air Flow: Provides the structure for the roots to grow into. Many orchid growers rate this as one of the best orchid barks available. The bark is sourced from 25-year-old trees, allowing enough time to thicken and ‘harden up’. This means it will take longer to break down. The bark is clean and has low contamination levels from litter such as cambium, wood pieces and soil.
• New Zealand Tree fern Fibre - Moisture Retention: Fernwood Tree Fern Fibre is added to improve the moisture-holding properties plus the benefits tree fern brings to orchid potting mixes.
• African Hardwood Charcoal - Cleans Naturally: The charcoal is made from hardwood and is petroleum-free. This mix doesn't use activated charcoal (activated charcoal may absorb more fertiliser compared to normal charcoal). Charcoal helps to keep the mix “sweet” and helps with removing impurities, as well as keeping the mixture open. The charcoal will also absorb moisture onto its surface. Charcoal also has antibacterial and antifungal properties.
• Pumice - Improves Drainage/Aeration: Pumice helps to keep the mixture open airflow and absorbs some moisture.

When repotting your orchids:

1. Before using the mix, empty the bag into a container, pour in a little water and mix it up thoroughly, just in case components of the mix have settled into layers.
2. Use just enough moisture to coat all the media lightly. Wetting the potting mix assists with distributing all the components evenly throughout the mix.
3. A slightly moist medium makes it easier to pack it between the roots when repotting.
